I've always seen this as a religious war. Even the rhetoric is, if 
one looks underneath the ostensible (democratic globalist values) and 
its anima (oil) and the reasons in the wings (water) - there's a 
strong ideological current dating back to before the crusades :)

Wasn't Pynchon paranoid about Masonic conspiracies?
