Whoever is heir to the peacock throne will have to deal with both
Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as, whatever comes crawling out
of Bagdad, after the dust settles. Pakistan, in particular, poses a
grave danger to everyone. Seymour Hersh, interviewed on Bill Moyer's
"Now," last week, detailed several very alarming examples of this
danger.

Early on, when the U.S. led coalition had the majority of Al Quada
trapped in Konduz, about 150 k from the Pakistani border, and were
ready to strike, an order came down from at least as high as Rumsfeld
denying coalition air power access to a "narrow corridor"- a free fly
zone- from Konduz to Pakistan, for three to four days, allowing
thousands of Al Quada to escape. Why? Because Mussarif begged
Rumsfeld to do this. It seems there were many ISI (Pakistani CIA) ops
encamped with the Taliban and Al Quada, including two generals.

Mussarif is completely at the mercy of ISI. Without them, he would
be extremely vulnerable to the Islamic Fundamentalists, which have
popular support, and, harbor the ex-Taliban and Al Quada; while the U.S.,
it seems, is at the mercy of Mussarif- our new best friend.

Furthermore, there is a real connection between North Korea and
Pakistan, Hersh says, because in exchange for NK missles, the
impovershed Paki's were forced to provide nuclear technology which
greatly accelerated the NK program, and has already allowed NK to
achieve their goal.

There has been heavy fighting recently along the Afghan- Irani
border. Nuclear Pakistan is teetering. Some of the untold billions
being spent to poke and provoke Saddam could more profitably
be spent in positive ways to encourage a more stable and moderate
Pakistan, rather than being beholden on shadowy players in the ISI.

I believe much (but not all) of the substance of Hersh's comments
can be found in a recent or soon forthcoming issue of The New Yorker.
