Can you imagine old age? Of course you can't. I didn't.
I couldn't. I had no idea what it was like. No even a
false image-no image. Nobody wants to face any of
this before he has to. How is it all going to turn out?
Obtuseness is de riguer.

There's a distinction to be made between dying and
death. It's not all uninterrupted dying.

Ah, but an old man in his seventies may take more
pleasure and excitement in the human comedy than you.
But of course Idiots can't imagine that this can be
true because they cannot even dream in comedies.

Sometimes you dream strange, impossible and incredible
dreams; on awakening you remember them and are amazed
at a strange fact. You remember first of all that your
reason did not desert you throughout the dream; you
remember even that you acted very cunningly and
logically...while you were surrounded by vacuous
voyeurs...you remember how cleverly you deceived
them...But how was it that you could at the same time
reconcile your reason to the obvious absurdities and
impossibilities with which your dream was overflowing?
One of your victims turned into an Afghan baby before
your eyes, and the baby into a loathsome little lady
scribbling limmerick on your linens--and you never
questioned it because your reason was at its highest
tension and showed extraordinary power, cunning,
sagacity, and logic? It was Terrance? You were sure of
it? You have no doubt? Ah, can you imagine old age now?
