Thomas Pynchon: Low-lands--Possibility of the Novel
Wataru Takahashi
Low-lands is one of Pynchon's early short stories and
appeared in New World Writing in 1960. Among these
short stories, Entropy has been often referred to,
because the conception of "entropy", which is an
important motif of this story, gives a useful
theoretical framework to analyze Pynchon's later
works. It seems, however, other early short stories
have rather been neglected.
I will take up a rather minor short story, Low-lands,
because I believe I can find in this story the
prototype of Pynchon's method of writing novels.
Nowadays we sometimes come across the expression,"the
death of the novel." Under these circumstances, where
should we seek the possibility of making novels? I
think I can find an answer to this question in
Low-lands. In this paper, I would like to show the
prototype of the method of writing novels Pynchon
acquired as an answer to this question.
