"Any band that brings together Jamaican ska and
British punk and actually makes it fun should indeed
be called the Specials. Their music was certainly an
exciting mix. The ska movement was born in Jamaica and
based on traditional reggae with subtle hints of R & B
and jazz. The punk scene, on the other hand, was an
explosion of brash, grinning, sneering sounds
epitomized by a certain penchant for loud apparel. So
when the Specials grabbed onto the rebellious,
high-energy punk and fused it with upbeat ethnic dance
music, a new musical maturation seemed on the horizon.
The common thread between these two colorful comrades
was their shared rebellion against societal
constraints. One was trying to overrun bourgeois
complacency, the other trying to overcome racial
boundaries. Formed in 1977, the Specials were the
innovators of this renegade alliance. While other
multicultural bands emerged within the English scene,
not many produced music that was so blatantly
political. Backed by its own 2-Tone recording label
(named for the band's multiracial agenda), the
Specials became a major player in the "Rock against
Racism" movement of the late 1970s. The popularized
"two-toned" look, which was comprised of a black tonic
suit and tie with a white shirt and porkpie hat,
became a symbol of both '60s-era slickness and racial
unity. [...]

[...] But what sets "Any Given Sunday" apart is that
it looks a little bit closer at the profound changes
that the game has undergone in recent years. With his
overcoat and porkpie hat, DAmato is clearly designed
to be reminiscent of Vince Lombardi. But when the
coach tries to inspire Beamen with stories about the
teamwork and honor of Lombardis peers, the younger
man replies that when he sees those men he just sees a
bunch of ghosts. [...]

[...] The Rude Boy takes to the streets and house
parties of West Kingston, Jamaica on motorcycles of
light, stripped-down chrome, dressed to rule the night
in cropped, slim pants, bum-freezer leather or tonic
jacket, intense shades and skiffle hair cut, with the
pork pie hat as an optional. This style of his speaks
every bit of delinquency and is something more than
the fabric itself; it is a form of response to
Jamaica's deteriorating socio-economic problems which,
in his opinion, is to 'Loot and Shoot' (Desmond
Dekker, Shanty Town). The following is used to
describe the Rude Boy:
Cool, that distant and indefinable quality, became
almost abstract, almost metaphysical, intimating a
stylish kind of stoicism - survival and something
more. [...]

[...] Lester Young was born into a musical family in
the Delta and lived in New Orleans before moving to
the Midwest (Minnesota and Kansas City). He played
reed instruments with family and territorial bands
until the mid- and late 1930's, when he was the
backbone of Count Basie's reed section. Rather than
play with the force of his contemporary, Coleman
Hawkins, Youngdubbed "the President" or "Pres"had a
cooler sound and attitude, affecting a pork pie hat
and avante garde dress. He left Basie and fronted a
number of small groups until he was inducted into the
Army.
While in the segregated Army he continued his
laid-back ways and relationship with marijuana, and
was court martialed and imprisoned. Upon release, his
critical accolades by the jazz press declined in favor
of the new heroes of bop, and his health declined
until his death in 1959 of mental and physical
exhaustion. [...] bothered by the commercialism of the
business of entertainment and rebelled against the
racism of the day. [...]
