one of the reasons that the "midget problem" wisecrack
doesn't work is that the crack undermines the
ambiguities.  

When Cindy kicks Dennis and his pals out of her life
she tells him to go 
"over the hill and far away" and he thinks, well,
perhaps if we had kids the marraige might have worked
out and with the same wisecracking attitude thinks
it's just great that the Navy made him a
communications expert. Dennis can't communicate or
procreate (the influence of Hemingway and Eliot) and
he goes  Over the hill and far away because that is
where the fairies live.
