I guess the fact that he chimed in as soon as the thread was started. Not
your fault, of course. In terms of the subject it's that jump from the 1930s
and 1940s to George W. and U.S. foreign policy in 2003 that's totally
dubious, but it's very credible to me that you posted a link to the year-old
article because it was new to you and potentially of historical interest to
others (of that handful of actual people who are left) subscribed to this
list, and not because your purpose was to try and corroborate the spurious
anti-Bush (anti-IBM, anti-Disney, anti-...) propaganda that, in some
quarters, such archival back-tracking is constantly being used to promote.
The idea someone floated to Colin Powell in Switzerland the other day that
top-level Iraqis and Americans (not necessarily Saddam and Bush, but whoever
it is in either regime that's driving their respective buses towards what's
going to end up as a pretty dumb and disastrous war for everyone concerned
if it does actually happen) should get together on neutral turf - say,
Zurich, with interpreters and a UN moderator - and bat out their absolute
bottom-line positions, was a good one.
I found that sudden show of patriotism by all those French and German
intellectuals after Rumsfeld's gaffe about "old Europe" very ironic.
Meanwhile, the actual death toll in the actual war between Israel and
Palestine escalates daily.
