They are compatible, we use a conversion formula to
convert the two systems of measurement. Just as 10
feet = 3.04801 meters. There is a certain
arbitrariness in the choice of system used, but if we
are going to measure we must choise units of
measurement.
In the Intro., Pynchon says he chose 37 degress
Celsius because it is the temperature of the human
body.

Where does he allude to what could have been a mistake
of confusing Celsius and Fahrenheit?
I'm looking at page 13. Is that last paragraph the one
you are reading as his alluding to a mistake he could
have made? Could you explain?
