There are innumerable way to look at the President's
Cowboy image. I'll give you one that interests me.
After 9-11, the world changed. Never mind that the
Left blamed the government's foreign policies for the
terror attacks. Never mind that the Left, the
self-centered Left, said that the buildings were
insured and that the resulting war on Afghanistan
would boost the economy. Never mind that the
conspiracy theorists contend that the Bush business
cabal planned and carried out the attacks to line
their own greedy pockets with blood money and war
profits.
The economy, as I predicted then, the world economy,
the global economy, already in recession, would sink
deeper and deeper into recession. Most hurt, I
predicted then and I contend this is the case, would
be the poor developing nations of the world, the poor
people living in the USA, particularly the Americans
living here from South of the Mexican border.
George Bush is not stupid. He knows enough US-Mexican
history and enough US-Mexican demographics to know
that his Party has the opportunity to win over the
Mexican-American vote and the Latino vote across the
USA. Prior to 9-11, this was very important to Bush
and his Party. How would they get the votes? Well, he
may not be very articulate, but he is bilingual. He
may not be a Roman Catholic, but Jesus is not only the
"philosopher" that has influenced his life most, but
his savior. He even has Mexican-American family.
The church can support a cowboy who loves Jesus if he
loves Mexicans too. And Bush sure seemed to be in love
with Mexican-Americans. At least until 9-11.
Mexican-Americans are not even welcome in the US to
pick tomatoes, let alone handling bags at the airport.
The U.S. military doesn't require soldiers
to be citizens. It accepts immigrants who are
permanent legal residents. But they can't screen you
bags at the airport? Could you imagine the looks on
the faces of people at US airports when a man with a
turban asks them if they would step to the side so
that he can screen their bags? After 9-11 the USA
began locking up men in turbans indefinitely and
without trials. Hardly the political climate in which
to discuss legalizing large
numbers of people who entered the United States
illegally. Progressive immigration policy is another
casualty of the attacks of 9-11. So, when is the last
time you heard the President speaking in Spanish?
