This is an interesting little side-trip--here are some offerings from my
library that illustrate something of the range and function of dedication (epigram
also an interesting topic for which similar illustrations can be made)...this
could be a fun parlor game--match the dedication/epigram to the Famous Book,
win prizes & very limited fame!
"Dedicated to the individuals and organizations who have supported this
publication" Salman Rushdie, The Satanic Verses
"For my mother and father" Manil Suri, The Death of Vishnu
"A dedication is only
a scratch where it itches--for ANNE, then
in whose bosom RACHEL lies
muselike
guiding my clumsy song
and giggling between the lines
--with blessings, Lass" Walter M. Miller, Jr., A Canticle for Leibowitz
"For Juan Valdez" Mark Helprin, Memoir From Antproof Case
"Once again, to ZELDA" F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
