<<Recently I read Gore Vidal's Live From Golgotha and
wondered where Vidal stands in your pantheon? I'm of
several minds about his work, immensely impressed with
concept, not always thrilled with execution. Anyone
have thoughts on this? >>

Someone else asked after Vidal a little while ago. I
think he's a better essayist than novelist, an
extremely good essayist -- funny, nasty, smart, writes
wonderfully.

If you can find it, there's a book called (I think)
Smiling Through the Apocalypse, a compilation of
essays and articles written in Esquire in the sixties.
It was reissued a few years back. It's a great
anthology generally and, specific to this, contains
back-to-back articles by Vidal and William Buckley,
each describing their stint as co-analysts during the
1964 conventions. They loathe each other and they
ended memorably, on screen, with Vidal calling Buckley
a crypto-Nazi and Buckley calling Vidal a queer and
threatening to hit him. (Howard K. Smith in the
background pleading, "Gentlemen: please!")
