The privacy that concerns Pynchon in these writings
you mention is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution,
which makes it political, and doubly so when a
partisan appointee like Ashcroft and the beneficiary
of a Supreme Court coup d'etat like Bush chip away at
the Bill of Rights.  Vineland offers much to ponder in
this respect.
