Dudes! The columnist Ron Rosenbaum (a Pynchon enthusiast) delves into the
word "dude" in the current New York Observer (July 7-14, 2003, p. 1, 7). He
doesn't mention Pynchon, yet his remarks might be of interest to at least
some of us on pynchon-l -- and not just because Pynchon uses the word in the
1984 Foreword. Rosenbaum also refers to "Valley-speak" and "subcultural
slang--in this case, California surfer talk."
