Affected? You might say affected, yes. Also "hiding behind a facade," as
he believes himself to be (is?) the deposed Charles the Beloved.
It's quite pointless to quibble over what one likes and what one or another
doesn't. I'll simply say that the qualities you seek in a novel (as I
understand them) prevent your taking Pale Fire on its own terms.
