Foax:
My inner Kinbote prompts me to note that the Epigraph of _Pale Fire_ is
about a cat having his day.
Two other observations: in _VL_ clearly "Rex" is an operative undercurrent,
both in the character Rex Snuvvle, the shooter (page 246), and in the bigger
shooting match, the "Reagan Exercise," REX 84 (page 353). Rex is a common
dog name (cf, say, "Rex the Wonder Dog" http://www.toonopedia.com/rex.htm or
My Dog Rex http://tinyurl.com/gj12 or Rex the Electronic Watchdog
http://www.yoursecurity.us/rex.htm).
Rex Snuvvle has his day, as does REX 84 - neither one of them very good
dogs, on the whole. And then there's (as mentioned) Desmond - who is one of
the first characters we meet (page 4) and also the character we leave with,
"wagging his tail." (page 385) A very good dog indeed. Who could put up here
http://www.pets-allowed-hotels.com/us/New_Jersey/VINELAND/ if he ever
wanders to the other coast.
