It's easy enough to read it that way, which is why
most readers inevitably will do so.  And, hey, taht's
fine, all they did was pick up and open a book, is
all.  But it never hurts to think about these things a
little.  Well, except here, maybe.  But, again, this
is but one instance of a pervasive characteristic of
Pynchon's semiotic web-weaving (and unravelling) ...
