North from San Francisco along the coast to Eureka are
several communities with a noticeable gay (male and
female) presence, partly due to permanent residents,
partly due to the weekend influx from the San
Francisco Bay area, a trend that was well under way
although still rather new in 1984. It makes for a very
free atmosphere in one of the loveliest places, imo,
on earth.  There remains some friction and conflict
with local residents who don't always share the
gay-friendly attitudes that are generally the rule in
the SF metro area.
