David--I should have mentioned that in dosing  a sickly kid in that era,
an essential ingredient in the mixture would have been cod liver oil.

I had it fed to me for years even though I was as healthy as the day is
long.

It was best source of the fat-soluble vitamins--A, D, etc.

John's lameness might have been the result of rickets, which kids who
didn't play out in the sunshine were especially prone to--from an
insufficiency of natural vitamin D production.
