The USO Bob Hope was but a shadow of the comedic genius whose delivery and timing were beyond compare.....Bob's biggest sin was employing lousy gag writers late in his career..........and regardless of his politics, his motivations to do those USO tours refelcted well on him....

I used to like the guy until he got a bit too right-wing for me.
I hate to rain on y'all's parade, but when he went to Viet Nam & in one of his jokes called the bombing of Hanoi a "slum clearance program."
Sometimes his humor was not so gentle. Still, I love the duet in Big Broadcast of 1938. And the road movies still get me to laughing.

"But when he visited Vietnam he found himself out of touch with the pot-smoking troops, many of them black, who heckled him and held up placards reading 'Peace Not Hope.' For once his chirpy personality became rattled, Hope, who supported the bombing of Hanoi, failed to comprehend why he had suddenly lost the widespread devotion that had hitherto been bestowed on him by the common soldier.
"Yet one must acknowledge the pleasure he had given audiences for more than half a century."
