I commend your tenacity, and I admit I'm moved by some of your points,
especially that his spells are so regular for one winter.  Does he tell us how
old he was  when these spells happened?  My theory is that they might happen
when he hopes Hazel might become a nymphet, maybe continuing for a long time
after he starts to abuse her.  His madness might blossom after she commits
suicide.  His madness (Ada might in fact be informative here) is the result of
his daughter's suicide post his longtime abuse of her.
