I cannot remember having read anything of Pynchon where he's talking about
minor terrorist regimes.

But "before the US got involved" is an interesting formulation. May I remind
you that the US has been involved for a long time, as long as Saddam was
"our" man against the fundamentalist Iranian Mullah-regime. It would be nice
to know what special envoy Rumsfeld had to talk to Saddam in 1983. Nobody in
the US-government was interested in the fate of the gassed Kurds before
Saddam became an enemy, they even helped him committing his crimes. All
these bad guys (for example the Taliban) only became interesting when they
openly turned out to be anti-Semitic. If there's proof that Iran is
financing Hamas a war against the Mullah-regime is only a question of time
because now they definitely will try to get weapons of mass destruction to
safeguard themselves against any US-attack. It would be great to see them go
before they are capable of blackmailing the whole world.
