Aye! Again I agree with Don and you other folks on the subject of early
straight read-through followed by group read. The spoiling issue does not
practically apply here since readers will (and should?) disagree about
what's going on anyway so everyone would be spoiling something different.
And if you can't REALLY spoil something for somebody why bother spoiling at
all? Also, big applause from this reader for anything we can agree to do
NOT to sound/look/feel like a bookclub. Once, in a fit of early-Mom
hormones (my baby was about 20 weeks old) I joined a local library bookclub
to try to do something normal so I could be a good, conventional influence
on my new baby. I lasted through two meetings before I realized mommy
hormones were not nearly as strong as I'd supposed when positioned against
my literary snobbery hormones. I am proud to say I left quietly without
killing the Mom who said that her favorite "difficult" author was Joyce
Carol Oates.

I have hated JCO since I read "Them" while attending an
accreditation-suspended high school in a blue-collar city. Her clueless
romanticizing of Mike Tyson only made me despise her more. Her condescending
paternalism is an insult to the American working class. She should be forced
to work as a clerk in a Dunkin Donuts in Allston for the rest of her life.
