Re: Pale FireAlthough for me, JCO's Expensive People is by far the most enjoyable novel I've read of hers. And it has a narrator who's deranged, unreliable, and pretty whacked! A fun book.

I am proud to say I left quietly without killing the Mom who said that her favorite "difficult" author was Joyce Carol Oates.

I have hated JCO since I read "Them" while attending an accreditation-suspended high school in a blue-collar city. Her clueless romanticizing of Mike Tyson only made me despise her more. Her condescending paternalism is an insult to the American working class. She should be forced to work as a clerk in a Dunkin Donuts in Allston for the rest of her life.
