He does tend to take plot a little too seriously. But there is
one part in Cryptonomicon that I found apt- when the main
character logs on to an anonymous list to get some feed-
back/advice concerning the cyber woes which have beset
him and his neo-econ comrades, he engages an entity who
is a little too smart and list-available. He hopes he is not
encountering his worst nightmare- a sixteen year-old with
way too much time on his/her hands, whose identity has
become contingent on list politics. I've tried to find the
passage, but have not been successful.
Stephenson is entertaining, but not in a way that makes me
want to re-read his work, at least not so far. In comparison,
Nabokov seems to have come up with a structure which must
be re-read as it is being read. And yet, we don't mind this-
very artistic and entertaining. Maybe at the time of its pub-
lication it was also socially relevant.
