Which it is but, pursuing this further, you might cite as well where Pynchon 
"illustrates" a grasp of world affairs (exceeding Freiedman's).

Since the late eighties he's written Vineland, M&D and an assortment of 
pretty weightless essays, given the source.   Where, precisely, is his grasp 
illustrated?

I might add that I find Friedman self-promoting and self-pleased, but that by 
itself doesn't disqualify his opinion.   

What's been said about him here is largely irrelevant to the article I cited, 
but educate me.   Show me the cites.
