Does anyone have a copy of the original Saturday Evening
Post, December 1964, version of TSI, or other earlier version?
I'm particularly interested in the following, on p.186 of the
Back Bay Books/ Little Brown version, where the narrator
describes Grover's demonstration of the mathematical
meaning of integration:
-drawing straight vertical lines from the curve down
to the x-axis, like the bars of a jail cell-
Grover states:
-you can have as many of these as you want, see,
as close together as you want-
Tim says:
Till it's all solid...
Grover corrects:
No, it never gets solid. If this was a jail cell, and
those LIVES [my emphasis] were bars...
I'm wondering if the substitution of 'v' for 'n' changing
'lines' into 'lives' is a deliberate or a misprint. If deliberate
it changes, somewhat, the meaning for me.
There is a correspondence, of sorts, in the other striking
correction this time of Etienne by Grover on page 192, where
Etienne confuses "calvary" officer for "cavalry" officer. But in this
case, there is no possibility of a misprint, both the narrator's and
Grover's intentions are explicit.
respectfully
