Hello old p-list, my refuge in times of trouble

I respectfully disagree to your characterisation, David, that the list has
changed that much, at least not in the last four years. You cannot expect
that a literary mailing list like this is silent about political things one
week before the Third World War (maybe) is knocking at the door.

"But America was certainly hated all around the world long before this coup
d'etat. And we weren't hated, as George W. Bush would have it, because of
our liberty and justice for all. We are hated because our corporations have
been the principal deliverers and imposers of new technologies and economic
schemes that have wrecked the self-respect, the cultures of men, women and
children in so many other societies.
It's that simple.
What are we to do when confronted by such hatred? Respond to Code Red and
run around like chickens with their heads cut off."
(Vonnegut)

The last sentence sounds to me a bit like "we all have tried to deal with
the slow escalation of our helplessness and terror in the few ways open to
us" (SL Intro, p. 19).

But it's not just America that is to blame as Mr. Vonnegut says, that's too
self-centered. It's Western civilisation and globalisation that is using
double standards whenever it suits them. Wrecking the self-respect and the
world's cultures isn't exclusively American, although the dominance of
course is decisive for the terms of trade after WW II. Our corporations have
made Saddam Hussein a big guy for the sake of their shareholders and the
Iraqui children are paying the price with their lives for over a decade
already.

Speaking about air war terror Mr. Vonnegut surely is a good witness and has
got something to say about it.
