I see the problem. 

If it is supposed that perceptions like language rely on difference (one
'constant' perception without difference would not be 'perceived'), then
perhaps the recurrence of relatively similar (though not identical)
combinations, successions, etc. could lead to differentiation and,
consequently, categories.
