The Americans did a lot of standing by, mostly. Standing by while Russian troops raped and shot civilians. Standing by while machines etc were confiscated. Once the moralization was over, and before the embarrassment for having 'bleached rice' with nuclear devices in Japan had hit the mainstream, America was Valiuminously praising itself and raising nary a whimper about the mistreatment of its enemies and friends alike.

It's th' money.

I think Ted Kaczynski and Thomas Pynchon might have more in common than most members (sheep) of this list would like to admit.
