davemarc, thanks for doing what none of the
blabjockeys have been able to do -- tie this thread
to Pynchon.

Rich:
>doug--malign is talking about grammar, not the
>artistic usage of language, black or otherwise.

Malign is just peddling more of the insulting,
demeaning views of African-American culture that
he/she has written here in the past. If writers like
Hurston, Ellison, etc. had followed the kinds of
prescriptions and proscriptions offered by the likes
of Malign, they wouldn't have produced works that
demonstrate the beauty and power of their so-called
"non-standard English", instead they would have
listened to unimaginative grammar teachers and wrung
the idiosyncratic magic out of their prose. Pynchon's
works would be quite different, too, were he to comply
with Malign's strictures and limit himself to
"standard" English, whatever that might be. I'm sure
a grammar teacher would have all sorts of advice for
Pynchon that would rip much of the music and mystery
from prose.

-Doug
