>Which is to say you can't cite any such remarks.
No, I choose not to repeat your bullshit. Curious
readers might simply flip back through your comments
in this thread; more adventurous types might want to
check the archives.
Malign:
>Nowhere have I stated a detestation of Black English.
That's highly debatable, based on the comments you've
made in this thread. I do understand that you might
feel the need to disassociate yourself from earlier
remarks, however. You're looking about as open-minded
as Pynchon-L's newest pontificator.
Malign:
>Nor have I said anything about prescribing grammar to
>language as used in poetry or fiction or to any other
>artistic purpose by Whites of Blacks.
Glad you cleared that up. The only problem with your
approach is, that in the process of proscribing
certain ways of talking or writing English generally,
those modalities will no longer be available for
artistic exploitation. The grammar teachers will beat
the creativity out of the heads of marginalized
youngsters before they never have a chance to develop
it.
Doug:
<<...AND how to create beautiful prose by ignoring
rules.>>
Malign:
>Yes. Note the "AND."
Yes. Note that I wrote that sentence, too, making the
distinction you prize here.
Malign:
>You're very likely the only one on
>this list who would take sides in an argument over
>prescriptive grammar according to what you believe
>Pynchon thinks.
I have no idea what Pynchon "thinks", except where
he's translated his thoughts into his published works.
Fact is, Pynchon's work embraces a range of English
expression that Malign's rules would prohibit. But
you're in the right ballpark, at least; I'm happy to
join davemarc in trying to steer this thread back to
Pynchon, a topic that Malign avoids perhaps even more
consistently than Mr T and "Morris" and other
contestants for most-frequent-P-list-poster status.
