Saddam's deputy appears at Baghdad press conference

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz has called a
press conference in Baghdad amid rumours he had
defected or been shot.

Aziz, one of Saddam Hussein's most prominent
spokesmen, told reporters: "I decided to meet you to
affirm that we are ready to fight."

Earlier, the Foreign Office in London said it was
investigating rumours Aziz had fled to Northern Iraq.

Junior Foreign Office minister Mike O'Brien said the
rumours came from a Bulgarian source.
