Actually, I've spent several hours of research digging up intelligent and
informed articles on this subject and sharing the information with this
list, either by summarizing the points or by presenting links in cases where
the articles speak best for themselves.  My expectation was not that anyone
else would do this research work, but that my efforts would be appreciated
by those who are sincerely interested in the subject and especially by those
who are not familiar with the fascinating work that has actually been done
on in linguistics and pedagogy (as opposed to the myths that have persisted
over the years and decades).

I believe that the links I've shared with this list over the past weeks
comprise an excellent introduction to this subject and its subtleties.  The
link that MalignD found and shared is just as worthwhile.
