the cork.” The genie/bottle reference should be obvious but the Fisher of Souls
thing can go either way: as the devil (“I trust, young man, that neither
idleness nor licentious pleasure . … the chief baits with which the great
Fisher of souls conceals his hooks, are the causes of your declining the career
to which I would incite you.”—Sir W. Scott: The Monastery) or as Jesus (“A
Fisher am I of souls who bear witness to Life. A Poor Fisher am I who calls to
the souls, collects them together and gives them instruction.” ) I guess this
has some interesting resonances later in the story: is Siegel (or at least the
confessor position he inherits) the cause of the degraded nature of the party
or its salvation?

I don't know where you got the Jesus reference above, but the Bible verse below
is very commonly known. Lupescu seems to be refering to himself as being stuck
in the genie bottle for centuries the fisher until Siegel comes along to
liberate him from his role as host to TWSC. "Heart of Darkness" is directly
referencd by Lupescu, and there is a clear inference that Siegel will be a
reverse savior (not the devil), liberating/delivering by means of death. The
Pig is usually a symbol of fertility, but here it is just the opposite, an
aborted foetus smelling of formaldehyde.

Mar 1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew
his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Mar 1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you
to become fishers of men.

Mar 1:18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
