Science, besides being an instrument of power over
nature, is something that makes some sophistocated
enough not to believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa, the
great pumpkin, God. Who needs heaven? So the fallen
angels in hell build a "paradise" in hell. So too a
heaven may be constructed or reconstructed on the
bombed out holy lands. Self-salvation, the great
tragedy of Gnosticism that Nietzsche experienced like
an  ocean enraged until it washed away even those
fragments that Eliot's tradition & talent shored as
ruins upon his weary soul, is a fulfillment of life
that will come to every man with the feeling that he
is making a contribution to society according to his
ability, compensated by a weekly paycheck. Perhaps,
Eliane, your experience with those young ladies was
not hell but only an earth you can afford to live in.
With every wave and revolutionary outburst, the world
moves West and down the Line. This is, of course,
Pynchon's own impertinent piece of propaganda. MMV may
be the work of a sophmoric artist, but in all its
silliness, it is not politically charged with
foolishness.
