If the entire plot is a preparation for both the actions of
Irving, and, for Siegel's decision not to intercede on behalf
of the partyers, then it must be concluded that the mad
Ojibwa is an Anti-Deus ex Machina, or, at the very least,
since no plot device manifests to save them, then the
major theme is an ironical absence of intercession.

But Siegel's inaction, I assume, is not a reflection of the
author's sensibilities, i.e., the author does not share Siegel's
"live and let die" attitude, else why write the story and publish
it at all, except to focus attention on Siegel's sin of omission?

The absence of MMV from SL, on the other hand, may have
rested on more than just a feeling that it was inadequate.
Keeping it "sealed" may actually draw more attention to the
Anti-Deus ex Machina theme than including it.
