... but, while it IS bleeding obvious to me, not to
mention others (and keep in mind, there are those out
there who are simply too smart to spend their precious
time mixing it up with the rest of us here, not to
mnetion those who aren't even onlist in the first
place), well, of course, I suggested some time ago
that there are hallmark moments (up to and including
an entire oeuvre) on Pynchonian indeterminacy so
finely wrought that they might well have been designed
as writer-to-reader Rorschach tests.  The opening of
Gravity's Rainbow is perhaps exemplary in this regard,
but not wanting to digress ...

The question is--the questions are, then--not only,
what does Pynchon say about Orwell, not only also,
what does Pynchon say about Pynchon, but, also, not
only, what do we say about Pynchon, about Pynchon on
Orwell, but about us in the process as well.   Still,
by the time Pynchon gets to asserting the oxymoronic
(or just plain moronic?) doublethink in the very names
of These Benighted States' "Department of Defense" or
"Department of Justice," well ...

.. well, Pynchon's "dissident left" sympathies are as
overt as they've ever been, and then some, here.  I
THINK Terrance is granting me, us, whoever, that much
here.  Expectations thereof, at any rate.  Though I've
no doubt that this is nuanced, complicated,
conflicted, even, in Pynchon's case.  Nonetheless ...
