Reality check:  Paul N's point is perfectly clear, and
as a long-time P-list participant he'll recognize
Mackin's tactic for what it is -- just another effort
to snarl the discussion in trivia and obfuscation, the
way he helped shut down the SLSL discussion.

*If* (big if) Paul and Malign and Terrance really
can't understand what Pynchon writes in this Foreward,
I suggest the problem is theirs, not Pynchon's.  Steer
the conversation towards the murkiest passages in a
Pynchon novel, however, and watch them interpret with
perfect clarity what an army of Pynchon readers can't
agree on in a library full of criticism. They're
howling just a tad too loudly and histrionically,
don't you think?
