Western Law Firms See Big Opportunities in Iraq

NEW YORK  — The rebuilding of Iraq is providing a big
business opportunity for Western law firms that are
ready to advise on clearing the legal minefield left
by the war and over 20 years of Saddam Hussein's
government.

>From San Francisco to London, lawyers familiar with
working in Arab countries and experienced in working
with different cultures are finding ways to
participate in what promises to be a plum assignment
in the legal industry.

Indeed, the Iraq situation is a big shot in the arm
for lawyers struggling for lucrative assignments in a
weak economy.

"When you are in a down economy, your biggest
customers are in the public sector, the U.S. and other
governments. Iraq is a big opportunity," said Barry
Kramer, an attorney in the San Francisco office of
U.S. technology law firm Fenwick & West. One of
Kramer's clients, Savi Technology, is currently
involved in infrastructure-related projects in Iraq.
