But of course I haven't been talking to myself here.
At least you spread it around a bit:

Not to mention, the many P-listers (antagonistic to me
or otherwise) who routinely post "off-topic", with
daily infusions of just the sort of stuff you're
complaining about. I'm a little busier than usual the
past couple of days, but not a day goes by that people
don't post excerpts from online articles that have
only a tangential connection to Pynchon, the latest
flare-up of long-standing political disagreements
(pre-and post-9-11), books, movies, music, etc. with
only a tangential connection to Pynchon, who fuss and
fret about name-calling or some other illustration of
bad manners, & etc. I'll be darned if I'll take all
the heat for mindless pleasures on Pynchon-L.
It's also true, as you say, that you've been making
this netiquette plea for a long time -- somebody
always is on Pynchon-L, for years. If I remember
correctly, last time you issued such a call, the very
next post published on Pynchon-L was MalignD calling
somebody a "bleeding asshole" in a thread that was
proceeding quite energetically, with no obvious
reference to Pynchon, without my participation.
