Tantivy: weird word update

Howdy

I ran across "tantivy" in the Shorter OED while playing Scrabble
tonight. A sense missed in the "weird word" piece Doug forwarded a week
or so ago is this one:

"D int Expr. the sound of galloping hoofs or feet, or the sound of a
horn, especially

(....pregnant pause....)

(....drum-roll....)

(....wait for it....)

a *post-horn* or hunting horn. Archaic." (emphasis mine...)

This clearly demonstrates, at least, that the gentlemen and women who
compile that column are not Pynchon readers. All you callous urban
sophisticates must've known this already, but it is new to me, hay-seed
that I am.

"Wasted days 'n' wasted ni-i-ights"
Mark
