I call it a "trend" away from democracy because US
history (and pre-US American history) shows
conflicting trends, or tendencies, some towards a more
democratic system and some toward a more "fascistic"
one. It's complicated, multi-dimensional, ambiguous.

That's part of the story, but that's not the
experience of every American of course, not in the
1760s of M&D, the 1960s of GR, the 1980s of Vineland,
or the present in which Pynchon writes a Foreward to
_1984_.
