Pynchon seems to express a different opinion in the
Foreward, pointing out how post-war British society
does provides the setting for the novel.

I've heard that Pynchon's Foreward is going to be
included in a new edition of the Signet mass-market
paperback edition; thus young readers will be exposed
to Pynchon, in the US at least.
