Just as ignoring the allusion to 9-11 limits and
distorts what TRP is addressing. "Homeland" is a
highly charged word, has been for a long time, in
addition to its recent increased reverberation in the
US. Think Pynchon chose to use "homeland" without any
idea that his readers might hear in it an echo of
post-911 homeland security and the PATRIOT act? I
doubt it highly. P lives in Manhattan, after all,
lived through 9-11, has a social life, editors,
friends, etc., not to mention the textual evidence.
