This is the crux of the issue. People in "the west" enjoy a freedom
which is based on the exploitation of cheap labor and 'pirated'
resourses of the third world. No society based on capitalism can
offer the majority of its citizenry anything close to what is called
"freedom" without the horrendous exploitation of non-industrialized
cultures. That is the truth of "Freedom is Slavery."
Pynchon alludes to this in, appropriately, Ch. 11 of M&D, which
by itself would make M&D a masterpiece. The bankrupt- morally
and economically- modus operandi of the modern capitalist state
is based on nothing less than the transformation of the third world
into a permanent underclass, dedicated to fulfilling the fetishistic
whims of the "first" world. The freedom of the west is based on the
twin gallows. Trumpeting the freedom half of the bloody equation-
"Freedom is Slavery" is the height (or abyss) of doublethink.
