Can't agree with that. Having written his novels,
_Vineland_ in particular, Pynchon gets the assignment
to introduce a new edition of _1984_, certainly, but
without 9-11 he writes a different foreword. Without
9-11, Thomas "a screaming comes across the sky"
Pynchon is the wrong man to provide context for _1984_
at a moment when tens of milions of people around the
world condemn the US for its aerial terrorizing of
Afghanistan then Iraq, blood for oil, naked US
imperialism, swaggering macho monopoly capitalists
with weapons of mass distruction at their command, and
observing that the convergence of computer and
communications technologies now permits -- in the US
as in no country before -- government and corporate
leaders to know intimate secrets of private behavior
and manipulate them in a way that puts Their
motivation of Pirate Prentice to shame.
What other living author writing in English could do a
better job of ushering in an American (and British,
when the British edition appears later this year)
reader into the world of _1984_? (If you choose to
suggest another author, you have to be specific why
and use the author's works for justification.)
