Except for reviewers and the many other readers of
Pynchon's Foreword readers who choose to approach the
Foreward unrestrained by the tunnel vision of
Pynchon-L's gang of four, of course. The Foreword
showcases many elements of the Bush Administration
response to 9-11, that might be considered
"fascistic":  censoring news, subordinating civil
liberties to self-defined wartime necessity, the
mind-deadening insistence on "homeland" security,
rewritten history, documented abuses of human and
constitutional rights.

The Foreword is also of a piece with things Pynchon
has previously said or written about the Bush family,
too -- his inclusion of the rumors, in Vineland, that
Bush I was involved in the cocaine trade, and his
reminder, in Playboy Japan, in the fall of 2001, that
the Bush and bin Laden families have been business
partners.
