Yes. In light of recent events, the choice of the words 'bombs falling'
stands out in the passage. It is very crafty wording that defies a
specific reading and creates a tension with the word 'homeland'
and its current connotations. If the remainder of the passage is
not shitty writing, it too is very craftily written and not at all clearly
decipherable if one chooses to stick as closely as possible to
the style and content as written. I don't think this argument is silly
at all. I rarely find Pynchon as clear and obvious as many are suggesting.
I think the subtlety of his craft merits ongoing debate and continually
puts the making of points and conclusions back on the reader.
If the passage is as clear as some think, I have to go back to the shitty
writing theory. Again, I have the same reaction to this passage as to
the SL paragraph. A casual reading leads me to the same conclusions as
those who think it is obvious. But a close and careful reading pulls the
rug right out from beneath the casual reading.
