    + perhaps hollander's metaphor is a little misleading. true, people have 
    visions and pynchon's prose - think of the posthorn or the ampersand - 
    contains graphical elements. but it's not visual art. there's much more     
    music in it. musical is the rhythm and musical is the color (!) of sound.   
    while reading you should imagine the words being spoken. if there's more in 
    the text (and often there is ...) --- this goes for musical prose-writers   
    like pynchon, joyce or thomas mann ---, you will not see yet HEAR it. the   
    appropriate metaphor for this was coined by the psychoanalyst theodor reik:
