It is quite seductive to get tangled up in the ad hominem, but, although I
degenerate as much as anyone, the most satisfaction comes from sticking with
the ideas and whether or not they can stand under close scrutiny. The very
activity of grappling with understanding Pynchon's writing unleashes the
very dynamics he is addressing imo.
